Getting you up to speed
Getting you up to speed so together we can lower it!
Devilbend Natural Features Reserve situated in Tuerong has become increasingly busier since it opened in 2012, which is great in so many ways. Families exploring, enjoying picnics, bike riding, horse riding, fishing and nature lovers all enjoy the reserve.
With that, the surrounding roads have also become busier.
So together let’s change the 80 and old End 80 km/h zones that haven’t changed with the times, to a new safer speed limit of 60 km. This will have such a huge safety benefit to everyone, including drivers, and all wildlife using the area improving safety to match the new family friendly environment of the area.
Details: The gravel section of Hodgins Rd from Stumpy Gully Rd to Derril Rd speed limit needs changing. The road is an End 80 zone, meaning you can do 100 km per hour if you so desire- and many vehicles do so.
Tuerong Rd, running from Old Moorooduc Highway to Derril Rd is also an End 80 zone, and Derril Rd is 80 km.
Hodgins Rd is often used by horse riders, bike riders and walkers. If you want to cross between the northern part and the southern part of the reserve, you have to cross Hodgins Rd twice. To have vehicles travelling between 80 – 100 km per hour along these roads is just not safe for the broader community using the area, or for the wildlife. This section of road often requires grading and 4 X 4 vehicles have damaged the road verge so it is difficult to move over if passing pedestrians or other users.
What’s needed is a new 60 km speed limit on Hodgins, Graydens, Derril, Stumpy Gully and Tuerong Roads for the sections mentioned above for the safety of all and I am seeking your support to help make this happen.

One of many spots of concern is the Crossing between Devilbend and Bittern – Cars can travel past this cross over 80+ Km
Benefits of a new 60km zones
Road maintence
More and more frequently now the gravel roads are dreadfully potted and corrugated. By reducing the speed limit the road maintenance frequency should also improve.
Wildlife
Less wildlife road kills and improved safety for drivers. Since November 2020, I’ve personally moved numerous dead of kangaroos off Hodgins, Derril and Tuerong Roads.
Bike riders
Many more bike riders are now using the reserve and surrounding roads. A 60km speed limit on the roads around and leading to Devilbend would increase rider safety.
Safety for walkers
As more and more people are discovering the area, having a new 60 km zone would be safer for crossing roads and simple exploring the surrounding area as many do.
Horse riding
Devildend Reserve and surrounding roads are used by local horse riders. Most people do the right thing when they see a rider. For the times they don’t, 60km is much safer than 80-100km.
Supporting the locals
Local businesses and residents will also benefit by slowing speeds, helping to reduce gravel road dust, noise and having smoother and safer roads to drive on. This will benefit tourists and locals alike.
